Patterns are created by applying resist paste through hand-carved stencils made from shibugami (persimmon-tanned paper), allowing the design to emerge as the fabric is dyed. The indigo dye is prepared using a naturally fermented vat made from sukumo (composted indigo leaves) and wood-ash lye. A homemade resist paste made from glutinous rice flour and rice bran is used in the process.
