Patterns are created by applying resist paste through hand-carved stencils made from shibugami (persimmon-tanned paper), allowing the design to emerge as the fabric is dyed. The indigo dye is prepared using a naturally fermented vat made from sukumo (composted indigo leaves) and wood-ash lye. A homemade resist paste made from glutinous rice flour and rice bran is used in the process. Each square piece of fabric is stencil-dyed individually, then carefully joined together and entirely hand-stitched into a finished garment. ⸻ Design This simple gathered skirt is designed to be worn in any direction—front, back, or side. The elastic-waist gathered design offers a gentle, body-friendly fit. ⸻ About So-i Indigo Dyeing So-i practices naturally fermented indigo dyeing using no chemicals. Through repeated sun-drying and rinsing, excess lye is removed, allowing the rich indigo color to fully develop. • Colors may appear slightly different depending on your display • Please contact us before purchase if you have any questions • Returns are not accepted unless there is a defect ⸻ Care Instructions • For the first 2–3 washes, gently hand wash in lukewarm water with an appropriate amount of mild detergent • For decorative items such as tapestries or noren curtains, hand wash in warm water once every 6–12 months to remove residual lye • Use detergents that do not contain fluorescent brighteners or bleach • Although the fabric is carefully rinsed and color-set after dyeing, some color transfer or fading may occur due to friction or washing • A yellowish-brown residue may appear during washing; this is a natural characteristic of indigo dye • With repeated washing, the residue will gradually fade, enhancing the vivid color unique to natural indigo • Each item is handmade, so colors and patterns vary slightly—each piece is truly one of a kind
